starting an etsy shop
I am Dylan, a multi-six figure Etsy & Shopify seller. My Etsy shop ranks in the 0.1% of Etsy shops worldwide and we reached $1M+ in sales in just 5 years.

No matter how cute your items are or how great your listings look, your Etsy shop won’t thrive without visitors. I’ve been in your shoes, struggling to get even 500 views per month. But with a few strategic changes, I managed to drive up to 50k visits per month to my shop with Pinterest for Etsy. Today, I’ll break down the steps I took to achieve this and how you can do the same.
When I first started, I thought Etsy ads were the key to driving traffic. However, at the peak of my ad spend, I was spending $109 per month and only making $207 in revenue. For physical products, this is unsustainable. Essentially, I was selling my items at half price because my ad spend consumed all my profit. At one point, Etsy ads accounted for only 2% of my total shop visits. For example, if I sold an item for $100 and spent $50 on ads to generate that sale, my profit was nullified. This led me to seek alternative ways to drive traffic organically.
Investing just 20 minutes a day can significantly boost your shop’s visibility without spending a dime on ads. Here’s how:
Social media platforms can be gold mines for driving traffic. However, I recommend focusing on Pinterest over other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. Here’s why:
Create a business Pinterest account. It’s easy to set up, and the analytics will provide valuable insights into your performance. Without these analytics, you’re flying blind. Pinterest pins have a longer lifespan compared to posts on other platforms, which means they build momentum over time like a snowball.
Check out this Loom video where I showcase my Pinterest analytics and how impressions can build up over time: Pinterest Analytics.
Creating pins doesn’t have to be a lengthy process. You can pin a listing in just a few minutes. The key is to be consistent and strategic. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to pin a listing: Pinning a Listing.
Before diving into Pinterest, ensure your Etsy listings are optimized with proper SEO. Your photos and pricing should be compelling enough to attract clicks, but without good SEO, those clicks won’t turn into visits. Your listings need to rank well both on Etsy and on search engines like Google.
Etsy’s offsite ads can drive traffic to your shop, but you need to price your items to account for the additional cost. About 29% of my traffic comes from offsite ads. To capitalize on this, include Google-friendly search terms in your Etsy SEO.
Concentrate on 1-2 platforms for the best results. I recommend Facebook and Pinterest. Pinterest users are more inclined to click on external links, unlike Instagram or TikTok, where users prefer to stay within the app. This user behavior makes Pinterest a more effective platform for driving traffic to your Etsy shop.
Pinterest users are conditioned to click on links that lead to external websites, which is not the case with Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. When people visit Pinterest, they are ready to explore external content. On the other hand, Instagram and TikTok are designed to keep users within the platform, making it harder to direct traffic to your shop.
Before you start leveraging Pinterest or any other platform, make sure your Etsy shop is fully optimized. This includes:
Once your shop is optimized, you can dive deeper into Pinterest strategies:
Regularly check your Pinterest analytics to see what’s working and what’s not. Look for patterns in the types of pins that perform well and adjust your strategy accordingly. You can watch this detailed Loom video on understanding Pinterest analytics: Understanding Pinterest Analytics.
Driving traffic to your Etsy shop requires time, effort, and strategic planning. By focusing on organic traffic through social media platforms like Pinterest and optimizing your Etsy listings for SEO, you can significantly increase your shop’s visibility and sales without relying heavily on paid ads.
