Setting Expectations Right
Allow me to reintroduce myself—Dylan Jahraus, entrepreneur, and advocate for setting expectations. At the core of my company’s values is the commitment to exceed expectations, and part of that commitment is setting them accurately. Today, I’ll shed light on the realistic path to Etsy success, a journey that requires hard work, consistency, and a long-term perspective.
1) Etsy is NOT a Get Rich Quick Scheme
Let’s be clear—Etsy success is not a shortcut to overnight riches. While some achieve impressive results within months, others might take longer due to various factors. Success stories include students making $13k profit by Month 3 or hitting $81k/month by Month 7. However, success depends on factors like consistently adding new products, optimizing designs, and maintaining dedication.
Quick Reality Check: Don’t be discouraged if your initial monthly revenue falls between $100 and $1500. Patience and persistence are key.
2) Entrepreneurship is Not a Shortcut to Laziness
If you’re considering Etsy or any business with the expectation of working less and making more, I urge you to reconsider. Entrepreneurship demands hard work, dedication, and a commitment to the process. Wanting financial success without putting in the effort is a recipe for disappointment. Commitment to the process triumphs over the desire for outcomes.
Food for Thought: Entrepreneurship is a journey, not a shortcut. If you’re not ready to 10x your workload consistently, entrepreneurship might not be your best fit.
3) Financial Management is a Must
Success on Etsy extends beyond making sales. Effective financial management is crucial. Many fall into the trap of spending as soon as they earn, leading to financial instability. If you’re struggling financially, consider significant lifestyle changes. Cut unnecessary costs, embrace frugality, and make short-term sacrifices for long-term gains.
Reality Check: Driving a 10-year-old car and opting for homemade meals can be powerful steps toward financial control.
4) Action Trumps Overthinking and Watching
Consuming YouTube videos can be enlightening, but success on Etsy is about action, not just knowledge. Endless watching without applying insights leads nowhere. Be a “watch” and “apply” person, not a “watch” and “make excuses” individual. Criticism and excuses won’t pave your path to success—action will.
Challenge: Are you a “do-er” or a “watcher”? Success lies in execution and implementation.
All in all, it is important to have realistic expectations when starting on your Etsy journey. It will take a lot of work, but that hard work can be incredible rewarding.
