how to grow on etsy
starting an etsy shop
I am Dylan, a multi-six figure Etsy & Shopify seller. My Etsy shop ranks in the 0.1% of Etsy shops worldwide and we reached $1M+ in sales in just 5 years.

Do you have digital products in your Etsy shop?
Here’s something I wish someone had told me years ago: you do not have to ship a single package to create meaningful income online.
When most sellers think about Etsy, they picture handmade products, print on demand items, vintage finds, or physical inventory stacked in a spare room. While those business models can absolutely work, I discovered that adding digital products on Etsy was one of the smartest decisions I ever made for increasing profit without increasing my workload.
Many sellers assume they have to choose between physical products and digital products. In my experience, that mindset leaves money on the table. Some of the fastest-growing Etsy shops I’ve worked with successfully combine both.
Today, I want to walk you through exactly how I think about digital products on Etsy, the biggest mistakes sellers make, the categories performing best right now, and the easiest way to get started even if you’ve never created a digital product before.
Before we dive into strategy, let’s address a few misconceptions.
Many people believe digital products on Etsy are automatically the most profitable products you can sell. Others think they require almost no effort once uploaded.
Neither assumption is entirely true.
Profitability depends heavily on pricing. For example, a $1 digital download may sound attractive because there is no inventory cost. However, Etsy fees take a much larger percentage of very low-priced items. As a result, some cheap digital products generate surprisingly little profit.
Likewise, building a successful shop around digital products on Etsy still requires work. Listings need optimization, product research matters, and customer demand must exist. Success rarely comes from uploading random downloads and hoping for sales.
Despite those realities, digital products offer one major advantage: scalability.
Once a product is created, it can often be sold repeatedly without additional fulfillment time. Therefore, sellers can increase revenue without adding shipping, packing, or inventory management responsibilities.
This is one of the most common questions I receive.
The answer depends on your goals.
If you’re building a shop focused entirely on digital products on Etsy, I strongly encourage you to think about customer lifetime value rather than individual transactions.
Many sellers become trapped chasing one-time purchases worth $2, $5, or $10. Unfortunately, that approach often creates an unstable business.
Instead, I recommend choosing customer groups you can serve for several years. Consider their evolving needs and create products that support different stages of their journey.
For example, a customer interested in budgeting today may eventually want financial planners, investment trackers, debt reduction tools, and business templates.
Meanwhile, physical product sellers can benefit tremendously from adding digital products on Etsy alongside their existing inventory.
The combination often creates more traffic opportunities, additional revenue streams, and higher average order values.
One of my favorite strategies is using digital products as loss leaders.
However, many sellers misunderstand what a loss leader actually is.
A loss leader is not simply a cheap product.
A successful loss leader attracts consistent sales and introduces buyers to the rest of your shop. If a low-priced product isn’t generating orders, it’s not helping your business. Instead, it’s becoming dead weight.
When creating digital products on Etsy for this purpose, focus on products with broad appeal and year-round demand.
Avoid seasonal products whenever possible.
Holiday listings often experience bursts of activity followed by long periods of inactivity. By contrast, evergreen products can build momentum continuously throughout the year.
Additionally, don’t assume your digital product must be a digital version of a physical item you’re already selling.
The product simply needs to appeal to the same customer.
One of the biggest breakthroughs for my clients happens when they identify their natural strengths.
Generally speaking, digital products on Etsy fall into two categories.
Functional products deliver value through utility.
These products help customers save time, save money, stay organized, or achieve a specific outcome.
Examples include:
I often recommend functional products because they’re easier to outsource and easier to enhance with AI tools.
Furthermore, customers typically purchase them for results rather than appearance.
Aesthetic products deliver value through visual appeal.
Customers buy these products because they look beautiful, unique, or creative.
Examples include:
Success in this category usually requires strong design instincts.
If design isn’t your strength, functional digital products on Etsy may provide a faster path to profitability.
After working with thousands of Etsy sellers, I’ve noticed several categories consistently outperform others.
This category remains one of my favorites.
Anything that helps customers save time, save money, make money, or stay organized tends to perform well.
Examples include:
The audience possibilities are endless. You can target students, families, entrepreneurs, travelers, side hustlers, or individuals pursuing financial independence.
Many successful digital products on Etsy live within this category.
Educational resources continue to attract strong demand.
These products serve:
Because learning never goes out of style, these products often maintain demand throughout the year.
Pattern bundles appeal to business customers who need ready-made designs.
Designers, print-on-demand sellers, and creative entrepreneurs frequently purchase these assets to save time.
For sellers with design experience, this can be an excellent niche within digital products on Etsy.
Teachers constantly need resources that simplify their workload.
Popular products include:
Classroom moms, PTA volunteers, coaches, and team organizers represent a large audience with ongoing needs.
This category often commands higher prices.
Examples include templates for:
These customers value efficiency. Consequently, they’re often willing to pay premium prices for templates that save significant time.
Among all digital products on Etsy, specialized business templates frequently offer some of the highest revenue potential.
Many sellers focus entirely on getting more customers.
I prefer finding ways to earn more from existing customers.
One of the simplest strategies is creating a shop bundle.
Instead of selling products individually, offer customers the opportunity to purchase a complete collection at a discounted rate.
This approach works especially well once you have five or more related products.
When implemented correctly, shop bundles can dramatically increase the profitability of digital products on Etsy without requiring additional traffic.
Customers feel they’re receiving greater value, and sellers enjoy larger transactions.
It’s a win-win scenario.
Whenever I talk about digital products on Etsy, someone inevitably says:
“That sounds great, but I don’t have any digital products.”
My response is always the same.
Start with what you’ve already created.
That’s exactly what I did.
Years ago, I designed signage for a personal event. The signs were simple, functional, and visually coordinated. Eventually, I realized other people might need the same resources.
So I turned those files into products and listed them.
You can do the same thing.
Ask yourself:
If the answer is yes, you’re already sitting on potential digital products on Etsy.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.
Instead, refine what you’ve already built, package it professionally, and make it available to buyers.
One lesson has guided nearly every successful business decision I’ve made.
Done is better than perfect.
Too many sellers spend months researching, planning, and second-guessing themselves.
Meanwhile, other sellers launch imperfect products, gather feedback, improve over time, and start generating revenue.
I always encourage entrepreneurs to take action before conditions feel perfect.
Waiting rarely creates momentum.
Publishing does.
The fastest path to learning whether digital products on Etsy will work for your shop is creating your first product and getting it in front of customers.
Adding digital products on Etsy completely changed how I think about growth.
Rather than relying solely on physical inventory, I created additional income streams that could scale without increasing fulfillment work. More importantly, digital products allowed me to serve customers in new ways while increasing overall profitability.
Whether you’re a handmade seller, print-on-demand entrepreneur, vintage reseller, or completely new to Etsy, there’s likely an opportunity for digital products within your business.
Start by identifying your strengths.
Choose between functional and aesthetic products.
Focus on categories with proven demand.
Bundle strategically.
Most importantly, begin with something you’ve already created.
You don’t need dozens of products to get started. You only need one useful solution that helps a customer solve a problem.
That’s often where the most successful digital products on Etsy begin.
