how to grow on etsy
starting an etsy shop
I am Dylan, a multi-six figure Etsy & Shopify seller. My Etsy shop ranks in the 0.1% of Etsy shops worldwide and we reached $1M+ in sales in just 5 years.

What would you do if one of your Etsy listings went from zero sales to thousands of orders because of a single Instagram Reel?
I have seen how powerful social media can be when an Etsy seller stops treating Instagram like an online product catalog and starts using it as a tool for discovery, connection, and conversion. While you absolutely do not need social media to succeed on Etsy, I believe Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers can dramatically accelerate growth when it is done strategically.
The biggest opportunity is not simply getting more followers. It is getting your products in front of people who have never heard of your shop, building a relationship with those potential customers, and making it incredibly easy for them to purchase.
That is exactly what I want to show you in this guide.
Etsy SEO is important, and I would never tell a seller to ignore it. However, when Etsy is your only source of traffic, your shop is heavily dependent on Etsy’s algorithm and buyer behavior.
An algorithm update can change how your listings are discovered. Search behavior can shift. Competition can increase. Therefore, I like to think of Instagram as a second traffic engine for your Etsy business.
Effective Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers gives you another way to reach potential buyers before they are actively searching for your product on Etsy.
More importantly, Instagram allows you to build an audience that belongs to your brand rather than relying entirely on marketplace search traffic. You can educate people, inspire them, entertain them, gather feedback, and eventually turn that attention into sales.
The key is understanding that Instagram is not another Etsy storefront.
One of the biggest mistakes I see Etsy sellers make is posting product photos and promotional graphics over and over again.
Imagine opening a magazine where every single page says, “Buy my product.” You probably would not keep reading.
Instead, think of your Instagram account like a magazine. Your job is to provide a combination of education, inspiration, entertainment, and influence.
That shift in mindset is at the heart of successful Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers.
I generally think about Instagram content in four major categories: Reels for reach, carousels for education and engagement, Stories for relationships, and automated DMs for conversion.
Each one has a different job.
If you want to introduce your Etsy brand to people who have never heard of you, Reels should be one of your biggest priorities.
Reels sit at the top of your funnel. Their primary job is not necessarily to make an immediate sale. Their job is to get your brand discovered by as many relevant people as possible.
For Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers, transformational content is particularly useful. Show the before and after of a design. Record yourself creating something in Canva. Capture the process of making a mockup, personalizing a product, packaging an order, or preparing a product for photography.
You do not need a complicated production setup. In fact, you do not even need to show your face.
Set your phone beside your computer while you work. Record your hands typing, your screen as you design, or a time-lapse of your workspace. Then reveal the finished product at the end.
Another powerful option is value-driven content.
Instead of simply showing a Mother’s Day product, create a Reel called “10 Mother’s Day Gift Ideas.” Instead of showing one baby shower product, share “10 Baby Shower Gifts for the Mom Who Has Everything.”
Now you are solving a problem while naturally introducing your product.
Additionally, pay attention to trending audio rather than choosing audio simply because you personally like it. The goal is to use the tools available on the platform to maximize your chances of discovery.
Your Reel cover should still look clean and attractive, but I would not spend hours creating elaborate covers for every single post. Good lighting, a clear visual, and a strong concept matter more.
Reels are excellent for reach, but carousels can be incredibly effective when your goal is education, saves, and shares.
This is another important part of Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers because people who save or share your content are giving Instagram strong signals that your content is useful.
Consider creating carousels around topics such as:
Show your audience different ways they can use the item. This is particularly effective when customers might not immediately understand the full value of your product.
Gift guides can be incredibly powerful for Etsy sellers because they connect your products to an actual buying occasion.
You could create a “10 Gifts for a New Mom” carousel, a “5 Personalized Gifts for Your Sister” carousel, or a holiday gift guide for a specific type of recipient.
You can also use carousels to showcase customer reviews, product sneak peeks, transformations, and behind-the-scenes content.
The goal is not to make every carousel a sales pitch. Instead, create content that someone would genuinely want to save or send to a friend.
If Reels are your discovery engine, Stories are your relationship engine.
In my experience, the people who consistently watch your Stories are some of your warmest followers. They are already paying attention to your brand, so this is where I would nurture that relationship.
Strong Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers uses Stories to make a shop feel active, trustworthy, and desirable.
For example, show orders going out and mention the customer’s first name when appropriate. A simple Story saying, “Sarah’s order is on its way!” provides real-time social proof.
You can also use polls to get feedback.
“Gold or silver?”
“Which design should I launch?”
“Which color would you choose?”
These simple interactions allow your audience to participate in the brand while giving you valuable information.
Pre-launch teasers, countdowns, review screenshots, workspace clips, packaging videos, and behind-the-scenes content can also work extremely well.
If you have piles of orders waiting to be shipped, show them.
There is a psychological element to this. Seeing other people buying your products creates social proof and can trigger fear of missing out. When potential customers see that your products are popular, they may become more curious about what everyone else is buying.
This is where I think Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers becomes especially interesting.
One of the most powerful strategies you can implement is automated Instagram messaging through a tool such as ManyChat.
Here is the basic concept.
You publish a Reel, carousel, or post featuring a product. In your caption or on-screen text, you tell people to comment a specific word, such as “LINK,” and promise to send them the product link.
When someone comments, the automation sends them a direct message containing the relevant Etsy listing.
That simple process can remove several steps between interest and purchase.
Without the automation, someone may need to visit your profile, find your link in bio, navigate to your shop, search for the product, and then locate the listing.
With an automated DM, the customer can receive the product link almost immediately.
Furthermore, asking people to comment gives your post another engagement signal. Instead of simply watching the Reel and scrolling away, viewers have a reason to interact.
The strategy also opens a private communication channel with your audience, which can help strengthen the relationship over time.
If you have a substantial Instagram audience, this is absolutely a strategy I would consider testing.
There is another piece of Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers that can directly affect your profitability: Etsy’s Share & Save links.
When you drive external traffic to your Etsy shop using qualifying Share & Save links, Etsy can reduce the transaction fee on those sales.
That means you are not only bringing your own traffic to Etsy. You can potentially reduce your costs for doing so.
For example, imagine you generate $3,000 in Etsy sales from external Instagram traffic in a month. A 4% reduction would represent $120 in savings.
At first, $120 might not sound enormous. However, when your external traffic and sales increase, those savings can add up quickly.
You can use Share & Save links for individual listings or your shop, depending on what you are promoting. I would use these links anywhere you are intentionally driving external traffic, including automated DMs, social posts, Pinterest content, and other external channels where appropriate.
Not every Etsy product is equally suited to Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers.
Instagram is highly visual, so I would prioritize products that create an immediate emotional or visual reaction.
These can include:
Names, dates, photos, and personalization can make products feel more meaningful and often create strong reactions.
Products tied to birthdays, weddings, Mother’s Day, baby showers, holidays, and other occasions naturally lend themselves to gift guides and social content.
Visual products such as wall art, neon signs, and decorative pieces can be particularly effective because the transformation is easy to show.
Print-on-demand products and fashion-related items can work well with outfit videos, styling content, and “how to wear it” posts.
Tumblers, mugs, and other lifestyle products are easy to incorporate into everyday visual content.
Templates and other digital products are especially interesting because you can literally show the creation process. A screen recording of a Canva design going from blank page to finished product can become compelling content.
Ultimately, I would ask myself one question: Can I show this product in a way that makes someone stop scrolling?
If the answer is yes, Instagram may be a strong channel for your Etsy shop.
One of the biggest barriers I see with Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers is perfectionism.
Your first Reel may feel awkward.
Your lighting may not be perfect.
You may hate the way your first few videos look.
That is normal.
The sellers who eventually figure out what works are often the ones who are willing to put in the repetitions. Every post gives you another opportunity to learn what your audience responds to.
Therefore, I would rather see you publish an imperfect Reel and learn from it than spend three weeks planning the “perfect” Instagram strategy.
Start with what you have. Use your phone. Record your process. Test different hooks. Experiment with educational content, gift guides, transformations, and behind-the-scenes videos.
Then look at what gets reach, saves, shares, comments, profile visits, and ultimately sales.
The goal is not to become an influencer.
The goal is not to collect thousands of followers who never buy.
And the goal is certainly not to turn your Instagram account into another version of your Etsy shop.
The real opportunity with Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers is to create a system where content attracts new people, Stories build relationships, engagement creates signals, automated DMs reduce friction, and external traffic brings qualified buyers into your Etsy shop.
That is much more powerful than simply posting another product photo and hoping someone sees it.
I do not believe every Etsy seller needs to be on Instagram. If your products are not particularly visual or your time would be better spent improving your Etsy SEO, listings, products, or customer experience, focus there first.
However, if you sell personalized gifts, meaningful products, home decor, apparel, accessories, drinkware, or digital products, I believe Instagram marketing for Etsy sellers is worth testing.
Start with Reels for discovery. Use carousels to educate and encourage saves and shares. Build trust through Stories. Test automated DMs to deliver direct product links. Finally, use Etsy Share & Save links when driving external traffic.
You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin.
Start creating, pay attention to what resonates, and improve with every post. The sellers who consistently test, learn, and adapt are the ones who give themselves the best chance of turning Instagram attention into real Etsy sales.
