I recently had the opportunity to join the YB Digital podcast to talk about my journey building an Etsy coaching business and the strategies I’ve used to help Etsy sellers grow their businesses.
During our conversation, we discussed everything from my corporate ecommerce background to why I believe customer focused marketing and organic growth are more effective than relying on paid ads.
How My Etsy Coaching Business Started
Before I started teaching Etsy sellers, I had a successful Etsy shop and a background in corporate ecommerce.
As I became more successful on Etsy, I realized there was a gap in the market for education. Many people were selling on Etsy or teaching Etsy because they experienced success during the ecommerce boom, but I wanted to teach the strategy behind building a sustainable business.
I started creating free educational videos on YouTube, and within a few weeks, people began asking for courses, coaching, and more personalized guidance. That early demand led me to build my Etsy coaching business.
Scaling Beyond My Etsy Shop and Etsy Coaching Business
Many people think Etsy is only about handmade products, but there are also digital products and print on demand businesses that are much more hands off.
My own Etsy business was very hands on, so I hired someone to manage the production and shipping while I focused on teaching. Eventually, I sold my Etsy brand to one of my clients so I could dedicate my time to growing my coaching business.
Today, I still coach every week while working alongside a team of coaches who support our students around the world.
Why Personalized Coaching Matters
One topic we discussed was how coaching has evolved as the business has grown.
In the beginning, I personally answered every student’s questions by creating custom Loom videos that reviewed their Etsy shops. As our community expanded, we moved to Circle, where students could receive private coaching, attend live group calls, and access courses in one place.
I’ve found that many students value personalized feedback even more than live coaching calls because it allows them to receive guidance specific to their own Etsy shop.
Customer First, Product Second
One of the biggest lessons I shared during the interview is a philosophy I apply across every business.
Customer first. Product second.
Many entrepreneurs create a product first and then hope someone wants to buy it. Instead, I encourage Etsy sellers to start by understanding their customer and then build products around that customer’s needs.
I believe this approach leads to stronger products, better marketing, and more sustainable business growth.
Why I Focus on Organic Growth
I often recommend that new Etsy sellers focus on organic traffic before spending money on advertising.
Running ads to products that haven’t proven themselves can become an expensive experiment.
Instead, I encourage sellers to improve their listings, strengthen their SEO, and use free traffic sources like Pinterest and Facebook.
During the interview, I shared an example of someone who posted screenshots of two product options in a customer focused Facebook group and simply asked people which design they preferred. Within 24 hours, that shop received around 100 orders, demonstrating the power of engagement over promotion.
What Successful Etsy Sellers Have in Common
One of my favorite questions during the interview was about what separates successful students from everyone else.
In my experience, the biggest difference is that successful students take action.
They ask questions, consistently work on their shops, trust the process, and avoid overthinking every decision.
That consistent action helps them move forward much faster than waiting for everything to be perfect.
