how to grow on etsy
starting an etsy shop
I am Dylan, a multi-six figure Etsy & Shopify seller. My Etsy shop ranks in the 0.1% of Etsy shops worldwide and we reached $1M+ in sales in just 5 years.

Over the years, my students and I have sold just about every type of product you can imagine on Etsy. However, one category continues to stand out to me because it combines practicality, personalization, and strong gifting potential: engraved and gold-stamped products. If I were starting an Etsy shop today, personalized products on Etsy would absolutely be one of the categories I would consider. The reason is simple.
You are not trying to convince someone to buy something they do not need. Instead, you are taking products people already use and making them more meaningful, beautiful, and personal. Think about a notebook, cutting board, keychain, wallet, water bottle, or wedding keepsake. These products already have a purpose. Add someone’s name, initials, date, handwriting, or a meaningful message, and suddenly you have something that feels much more special.
Additionally, engraving and foil stamping create a premium look that can make customers more comfortable paying a higher price. These products also work for birthdays, weddings, graduations, holidays, baby showers, anniversaries, housewarmings, and countless other occasions. Therefore, you can build a shop around personalized products on Etsy without relying on just one holiday or buying season.
I particularly like personalized products on Etsy because they solve two things at once: a practical need and an emotional need. A customer might need a notebook, but they want a notebook with their name on it. Someone may already own a cutting board, but they may want to give a newly married couple one engraved with their family name. Meanwhile, a bride may need wedding accessories, but she also wants those pieces to feel unique to her celebration.
That combination is powerful. Another advantage is durability. Engraving and foil stamping can create a much more permanent finish than stickers or vinyl, which helps reinforce the perception of quality. As a result, personalized products on Etsy can work particularly well when your positioning focuses on thoughtful gifting and premium craftsmanship rather than simply competing on price.
You certainly do not need to launch all 50 products at once. In fact, I recommend the opposite. Use this list as a source of ideas, then choose two or three products that fit your interests, equipment, budget, and target customer.
Daily-use items are a great starting point for personalized products on Etsy because customers already understand why they need them. Consider leather-bound journals with engraved names or gold foil, personalized planners for students, engraved metal keychains, and monogrammed leather wallets. You can make these even more meaningful by engraving a handwritten note or special message onto the product. Other ideas include engraved phone stands, reusable water bottles with names or logos, personalized leather sunglass cases, gold-stamped tote bags, canvas pouches with gold initials, and leather bookmarks with custom messages or quotes. Furthermore, these products can appeal to different price points, giving you opportunities to offer both affordable gifts and higher-value products.
The home and kitchen category gives you another huge opportunity for personalized products on Etsy. Start with engraved wooden cutting boards featuring family names, wedding dates, or meaningful messages. Personalized wooden spoons are another simple option, while bamboo serving trays can double as charcuterie boards. You could also create engraved coaster sets, leather coasters with gold stamping, personalized pan handle covers, custom bottle openers, engraved tea boxes, and wooden recipe cards designed to become family heirlooms.
Canvas aprons with gold-stamped leather patches can also make excellent gifts. Finally, consider custom kitchen signs for walls, countertops, or open shelving. These products work particularly well because they combine functionality with personalization.
I also love the office category because customers can perceive certain purchases as investments in their careers or businesses. That makes personalized products on Etsy especially interesting for professionals, entrepreneurs, and corporate gift buyers. You could sell engraved business card holders, leather card cases with gold-stamped names, leather mouse pads with monograms or logos, and wooden or acrylic desk nameplates.
Leather portfolios and folders are another premium option. Additionally, consider engraved pens, personalized pencils, clipboard covers, notebook covers, pencil holders, and laptop stands. Leather desk mats with gold foil and wall calendars with foil lettering can round out the collection. Because these products are connected to someone’s professional identity, there is often an opportunity to position them as premium gifts rather than inexpensive office supplies.
Weddings are one of my favorite categories for personalized products on Etsy because couples are already planning to spend money. Your job is to give them a reason to spend it with your shop. Start with leather vow books featuring gold stamping or engraving, wooden ring boxes with initials, and personalized wedding invitation or card boxes. A wedding memory box can become a beautiful keepsake for photographs, invitations, and other mementos from the day. You can also create champagne flutes with names, bridesmaid proposal boxes, engraved groomsmen gifts, leather place cards, and wedding guest book boards. Other ideas include engraved cake toppers and leather bouquet wraps with gold foil. Moreover, wedding customers often purchase multiple matching pieces, which can increase your average order value.
Seasonal gifting gives personalized products on Etsy another major advantage because you can adapt the same production skills to different occasions. Consider leather stockings with gold names, engraved wooden or acrylic ornaments, Valentine’s Day keepsakes, classroom gifts, and teacher gifts. Father’s Day could inspire personalized toolkits, engraved belts, or other accessories. Graduation is another opportunity for engraved frames and keepsakes. Retirement boxes with names and meaningful quotes can become premium memory gifts.
Meanwhile, personalized passport holders, baby announcement plaques, leather-bound baby books, and leather photo albums can target customers celebrating major life milestones.
You do not need to build a $10,000 workshop to start creating personalized products on Etsy. Your equipment should depend on the materials and products you plan to sell. If you want to engrave and cut wood, leather, acrylic, or certain other materials, a laser can be an incredibly useful tool.
For beginners, I particularly like the X-Tool D1 Pro as an accessible option. Depending on the machine, configuration, and current pricing, you may also find refurbished equipment that makes getting started more affordable. Glowforge offers another option for sellers who want a more beginner-friendly laser experience. For more advanced production, brands such as Thunder Laser and Epilog offer larger and more capable systems. However, I would not recommend buying the most expensive machine simply because you can. Start with what your business actually needs, then reinvest as your sales grow.
If your goal is to create premium personalized products on Etsy, foil stamping can add another dimension to your product line. Gold, rose gold, silver, and other metallic finishes can look beautiful on leather and thick paper products. Manual foil stamping equipment such as Kingsley machines can be an option for beginners willing to learn the process, while more advanced equipment can increase production capabilities. For smaller projects, you can also explore tools such as the Cricut Foil Transfer Tool. When working with leather, I recommend looking into vegetable-tanned leather because it can produce excellent results for foil stamping. Likewise, when engraving metal, laser-safe tape can help create better contrast depending on the material and engraving setup.
Having 50 ideas is exciting, but it can also become overwhelming. That is why I always tell my students not to launch everything at once. Instead, start researching personalized products on Etsy by looking at what customers already buy elsewhere. Visit sites such as Amazon, Walmart, and premium retailers and search phrases such as “gift for him,” “gift for her,” “personalized wedding gift,” and “home decor.” As you browse, ask yourself three questions: Is this useful? Can I personalize it? Does it provide enough blank space for my customization? A product covered in someone else’s branding is obviously not the ideal candidate. Meanwhile, a simple product that becomes significantly more valuable after personalization could be a great opportunity.
Pinterest is another resource I love for researching personalized products on Etsy. Search terms such as “engraved gift” and “foil stamped gift,” then save products, styles, photography, colors, and presentation ideas that catch your attention. Additionally, pay attention to how premium brands and influencers are presenting products. I often find that trends appear in higher-end retail and designer markets before they become common on Etsy. That gives you an opportunity to identify an aesthetic or product concept early. Once you find something interesting, do not simply copy it. Instead, ask yourself how you could adapt the concept to your own customer, style, materials, and brand.
The smartest approach to personalized products on Etsy is not launching dozens of listings immediately. Pick two or three ideas that you genuinely believe have potential. Create samples, photograph them properly, calculate your costs, and list them. Then watch what happens. Which product gets clicks? Which one gets favorites? Which listing generates sales? Which product takes too long to make? These answers are valuable. Consequently, you can use real customer behavior to determine where to invest your time and money. Once you know what works, expand the product line around that winner.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear about personalized products on Etsy is that you have to own every piece of equipment yourself. You do not. If you do not want to handle production, you can partner with local businesses that already own lasers, engraving machines, or foil stamping equipment. Start by searching Google Maps for local laser engraving, leather embossing, trophy, or custom foil stamping businesses. You can also visit craft fairs and markets or post in local Facebook groups to find makers interested in taking on additional production work. This can be an excellent way to test your business before making a major equipment investment. Before committing, however, agree on pricing, turnaround times, quality standards, packaging, and branding. I also recommend placing a few small test orders first.
If you are looking for an Etsy category with year-round potential, I would put personalized products on Etsy high on your list. Engraving and gold stamping allow you to transform everyday products into thoughtful gifts and premium keepsakes, which creates opportunities across home decor, weddings, office products, accessories, holidays, and major life events. More importantly, you do not need 50 products to get started. Choose two or three ideas, test them, learn from the results, and scale what works. You can start with affordable equipment, outsource production, or gradually invest in better tools as your sales grow.
Ultimately, successful personalized products on Etsy are not just about having a cool machine or making something pretty. They are about understanding what customers want to buy, identifying why they are willing to pay more, and presenting your products in a way that makes the purchase feel worthwhile. If you can combine useful products, meaningful personalization, strong Etsy SEO, and great product photography, you have the foundation for a shop that can generate sales well beyond the holiday season
