Recently, I had the honor of appearing on The Authority Business Show with Stacey Chillemi, where we discussed my journey from corporate retail employee to entrepreneur, educator, and business owner.
The episode was titled Your Side Hustle Is Not Growing Because You Are Running It Wrong, and it sparked a conversation that I believe many aspiring entrepreneurs need to hear.
I know what it feels like to dream about building something of your own while sitting behind a desk wondering if there is more out there. I also know how frustrating it can be when you put time, energy, and effort into a business only to see little progress.
Over the years, I have learned that most people do not struggle because they lack talent. Instead, they struggle because they approach business with the wrong strategy.
If you are currently working on a business, launching a new venture, or wondering why your side hustle growth has stalled, these are the lessons I shared during the interview.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, I worked in corporate retail and e-commerce.
Like many professionals, I followed the traditional path. I focused on building my resume, climbing the corporate ladder, and making strategic career moves.
Then life took an unexpected turn.
After relocating to a new city, I found myself without a job and struggling to find opportunities that matched my experience. Applications were ignored. Interviews never came. Confidence disappeared quickly.
At that point, I started experimenting with different side hustles.
One of those experiments eventually became the foundation of everything I have built today.
Looking back, I realize that my success was not about luck. It was about understanding what creates sustainable side hustle growth and committing to the process.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is that people start with the product.
They ask questions like:
While those questions seem logical, they often lead entrepreneurs in the wrong direction.
Instead, I believe in a principle that has guided every business I have built:
This philosophy came directly from my corporate background.
Early in my career, I was responsible for buying products for customer groups that were completely different from me. I quickly learned that my personal preferences did not matter.
The customer mattered.
That lesson became the foundation for successful side hustle growth because it shifted my focus away from what I liked and toward what customers actually wanted.
Whenever I launch a product, service, or program, I start by understanding the customer.
Once you know who your customer is, the business decisions become much easier.
Many entrepreneurs believe that successful businesses are built through creativity alone.
However, I have found that successful businesses are built through observation.
When I started selling online, I paid close attention to the people buying my products. Their questions revealed opportunities. Their requests highlighted gaps in the market.
Meanwhile, I began noticing patterns.
Customers wanted larger versions of products.
Buyers were willing to pay significantly more than I expected.
Demand was coming from audiences I had never considered.
As a result, I stopped making assumptions and started following customer behavior.
That shift accelerated my side hustle growth more than any marketing tactic ever could.
Another mistake entrepreneurs make is copying what they see on marketplaces.
If everyone is already selling a product, many people assume it must be a good opportunity.
Unfortunately, that approach often puts you behind the market.
Instead of searching marketplaces for inspiration, I recommend studying trend creators.
For example:
These groups often identify trends months before they become mainstream.
Therefore, if your goal is faster side hustle growth, you need to look ahead rather than follow behind.
By paying attention to emerging trends, you position yourself as an innovator instead of another seller in a crowded market.
One of my favorite business principles is simple:
Put the food in the oven before it is preheated.
In other words, start before you feel ready.
I cannot count how many entrepreneurs delay launching products because they believe everything needs to be perfect.
Meanwhile, opportunities pass them by.
I once sat on a product idea for months before finally launching it. After publishing it, the product generated substantial revenue.
My immediate thought was simple:
Why didn’t I launch sooner?
The longer you wait, the longer you delay potential side hustle growth.
Progress comes from action, not perfection.
Many business owners believe that paid advertising is the answer to every growth challenge.
I disagree.
Advertising can be powerful. However, organic marketing creates the foundation that makes advertising successful.
When we built our business, we focused heavily on organic content before investing significantly in paid traffic.
As a result, we created trust long before prospects became customers.
That trust fueled consistent side hustle growth without requiring massive advertising budgets.
Long-form content has played a major role in our success.
Platforms such as YouTube and podcasting allow people to spend meaningful time with your ideas.
Trust develops through depth.
Short-form content can increase visibility. However, long-form content builds relationships.
Consequently, I encourage entrepreneurs to use both.
Use short-form content for reach.
Use long-form content for trust.
Together, they create a powerful growth engine.
Business owners often ask how to grow an audience from scratch.
One simple strategy helped me gain traction early.
I consistently posted content, stayed active on stories, and engaged with people who already followed similar creators.
The key was making sure those followers aligned with my target audience.
Instead of chasing vanity metrics, I focused on attracting relevant people.
That distinction matters.
A smaller audience filled with potential customers will always outperform a larger audience filled with random followers.
This targeted approach creates stronger engagement and supports sustainable side hustle growth over time.
I have always been someone who prefers fast feedback.
If I try a marketing strategy, I want to know whether it works.
That is why I enjoy platforms that provide immediate signals.
For example, YouTube functions as a search engine. Pinterest functions as a search engine too.
Both platforms can drive traffic quickly when used strategically.
Additionally, automation tools can create powerful customer journeys that generate engagement and clicks.
Rather than waiting months to see results, I prefer testing, measuring, and improving.
This mindset has contributed significantly to long-term side hustle growth.
If there is one thing I would change, it would be hiring sooner.
Many entrepreneurs convince themselves that growth is temporary.
They tell themselves:
“This busy season will pass.”
“I don’t need help yet.”
“I’ll hire later.”
I did exactly that.
As the business expanded, I delayed bringing in support because I assumed growth would slow down.
It didn’t.
Eventually, I realized that sustainable side hustle growth requires delegation.
Hiring team members allowed me to focus on higher-value activities while creating better experiences for customers.
This lesson applies whether you are hiring:
The sooner you remove yourself from repetitive tasks, the sooner you can focus on leadership and strategy.
Entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding.
However, success comes with responsibilities that are often ignored online.
During periods of intense growth, I pushed myself too hard.
At times, my health suffered.
Relationships required more attention.
Energy levels dropped.
Those experiences taught me that side hustle growth should never come at the expense of your well-being.
Without health, nothing else matters.
Without strong relationships, business success feels empty.
Therefore, growth should enhance your life, not consume it.
One of the most meaningful topics we discussed on the show was family.
As entrepreneurs, we often believe we need to choose between ambition and family.
I do not believe that is true.
Instead, I believe we need systems, support, and priorities.
As our business expanded, I delegated more responsibilities both inside and outside the company.
Cleaning, cooking, operations, administration, and other tasks were gradually removed from my plate.
As a result, I could spend more time where it mattered most.
Strong side hustle growth is not about doing everything yourself.
It is about building a structure that allows you to succeed without sacrificing the people you care about.
If I could leave you with a few lessons from my conversation with Stacey, they would be these:
Every successful business starts with understanding the customer.
Customer first. Product second.
The perfect time will never arrive.
Start before you feel ready.
Do not wait for customers to discover you.
Actively seek opportunities, partnerships, and conversations.
Growth creates complexity.
Build support systems before you become overwhelmed.
No amount of revenue can replace your health or the people you love.
If there is one message I hope you take away from this conversation, it is that successful entrepreneurship is rarely about luck.
Most breakthroughs come from strategy, consistency, and the willingness to act before everything feels perfect.
When I look back on my journey, the biggest wins were not the revenue milestones. The most meaningful victories came from creating freedom, helping others succeed, and building a business that aligned with the life I wanted to live.
If your side hustle growth has been slower than expected, do not assume you have failed.
Instead, take a closer look at your strategy.
Focus on your customer.
Take action sooner.
Build trust through valuable content.
Invest in support when the time is right.
Most importantly, remember that every successful business started with someone willing to take the first step before they had all the answers.
